Semesterticket - Exemption and subsidization
All students are required to pay the Semesterticket fee. However, in some cases you can apply for exemption from the fee. If you do not meet the requirements but have particular financial difficulties making it difficult for you to pay the Semesterticket fee, you may be eligible for a subsidy.
Subsidizing the Semesterticket fee
Students who are unable to pay the Semesterticket fee due to particular financial hardship can apply for a subsidy. This subsidy is paid from the Social Fund which all students contribute to through their semester fees. To apply for the subsidy you must be able to demonstrate that payment of the Semesterticket fee would cause you considerable hardship, that your monthly income does not exceed your needs, and that you do not have any assets. All three criteria must be fulfilled.
The subsidy request is submitted separate from the re-registration or enrollment procedure. If your subsidy request is approved, you will be reimbursed for either part or all of the Semesterticket fee.
You can find further information about the subsidy as well as the application form on AStA’s Semesterticket Office website .
Exemption from the Semesterticket fee due to a disability ID
If you have a disability ID which permits you to use public transportation for free, please email the Campus Center a copy of your ID requesting an exemption. You can find the necessary email address on the Office of Student Affairs website .
The exemption is granted for the duration of the validity of the disability ID. The electronic Semesterticket will be deactivated accordingly. Please take care to note how long your disability ID is valid for.
Exemption from the Semesterticket without a disability ID
If you are unable to use public transportation due to an illness or disability and do not have a disability ID, you can complete and submit the “Application for Exemption from Payment of the Semesterticket Fee” together with the required proof to the TU Berlin AStA Semesterticket Office . Please refer to to the current information on the Semesterticket Office website.
Exemption from the Semesterticket due to leave of absence/part-time studies
Students taking a leave of absence or studying part time can request an exemption from the Semesterticket fee for summer semester 2020 or winter semester 2020/2021 using the Campus Center contact form.
Please be sure to refer to the information on the Office of Student Affairs’ website about the Semesterticket.
Your TU Berlin student ID has an integrated e-ticket, your Semesterticket or public transporation pass. The Semesterticket serves as your "fahrcard" - the personal subscription transportation pass of the VBB (the public transportation authority of Berlin-Brandenburg). If you are exempt from paying the Semesterticket fee, the ticket will be deactivated and no longer valid.
