Contents of medical certificate from a specialist doctor

The reason for application - the disability(ies) and/or chronic Illnesse(s) - must be confirmed by a medical certificate or a statement from the psychotherapeutic staff.

The certificate or statement must include

  • The probable duration of the illness
  • Medical symptoms of disease (understandable for laypersons)
  • Type of impairment resulting from the disease (including e.g. side effects of drugs, extent of treatments at the expense of time for study)
  • Recommendation of one or more academic adjustments and their extent, e.g. ...% more writing time for exams; granting of ... breaks of ... minutes each for exams (which last longer than 90/...min)
  • if necessary, recommendation on the approval of aids in the form of ...
  • Examination day, stamp and signature of doctor or psychological psychotherapist

The medical or psychotherapeutic findings are the basis for the decision of the respective chairperson. The symptoms of the illness and the effects on performance should therefore be described in detail. It is not necessary to state the diagnosis. It can be useful in individual cases if the symptoms of the illness are described at the same time. This should only be done if the patient agrees.

The probable duration of the illness should be described in order to justify whether the impairment will still exist in the coming semesters and for which period the application for academic adjustments will be submitted. A severely disabled person's card is not necessary and alone is not sufficient.
